1760 VOC N.E. Indies Duit – "New York Penny" Colonial Copper – NGC Genuine – Dutch East India Company
A fascinating piece of early American colonial commerce, this VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) Duit, commonly known as a "New York Penny," circulated widely in the American colonies during the mid-18th century.
Struck by the powerful Dutch East India Company, these copper duits were produced primarily for trade in the East Indies but became heavily used in New Netherland and colonial New York, where small change was scarce. Because of this, they were often referred to locally as New York Pennies.
This example is authenticated and encapsulated by Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) and labeled "Genuine."
Key Features:
- VOC monogram on the obverse with date 1760
- Copper colonial trade coinage
- Reverse depicting the Dutch crowned shield and lion
- Certified authentic by NGC
- Historic link to Dutch colonial trade networks and early American commerce
Coins like this circulated alongside British and Spanish colonial coinage, making them an important artifact from the complex monetary environment of 18th-century America.
