Offered here is an attractive 1853 United States Braided Hair Large Cent, a classic mid-19th-century American copper coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Braided Hair cent features Liberty facing left with LIBERTY inscribed on her coronet, surrounded by 13 stars. The reverse displays ONE CENT within a wreath surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
This example retains strong overall detail for a coin more than 170 years old. Liberty's portrait, hair, coronet lettering, date, stars, reverse wreath, denomination and surrounding legends remain clearly defined. The coin displays an appealing circulated brown/copper appearance.
The original collector's holder is handwritten "EF40," indicating their assessment of the coin's grade. This is an uncertified/raw coin, however, and the grade should be considered the collector's opinion rather than a professional grading determination.
