1866 SHIELD NICKEL (with rays) - United States, First Year of Issue
The 1866 Shield Nickel marks the debut of America’s first five-cent coin made from nickel and copper, replacing the silver half dime. Designed by James Barton Longacre, its obverse features a Union shield symbolizing national strength and unity in the post-Civil War era, flanked by olive branches and topped with a cross.
The reverse displays a large numeral “5” surrounded by thirteen stars and radiant lines (“rays”) between them — a short-lived design element discontinued after 1867 due to striking difficulties.
Because it was the first year of issue and the only Shield Nickel with the “rays” design, this coin is highly sought by collectors for its historical significance and distinctive appearance.
