1883 Liberty Head "V" Nickel – No Cents Variety – XF45 (Extremely Fine) – Key Early Type
Offered here is an 1883 Liberty Head "V" Nickel – No Cents variety, graded XF45 (Extremely Fine).
This is the famous first-year issue of the Liberty "V" Nickel design — and notably the "No Cents" reverse type that caused immediate controversy when released.
Why This Coin Matters
When the 1883 Liberty Nickel was first struck, the reverse featured a large Roman numeral "V" — but did not include the word "CENTS." Unscrupulous individuals gold-plated some examples and passed them off as $5 gold coins, prompting the Mint to quickly redesign the reverse later that year to include "CENTS."
This makes the 1883 No Cents issue one of the most historically interesting U.S. nickel varieties.
