This beautiful relic card features an authentic handwritten manuscript fragment attributed to Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet), one of the most influential thinkers of the Enlightenment and author of Candide, Philosophical Letters, and countless works that reshaped modern ideas of civil rights, liberty, and reason.

Produced as part of the 2024 Eternal Cuts World Celebrities Edition, this card is part of a strictly limited run of only 99 copies worldwide, with this example numbered #59/99. The vivid holographic border highlights a clean windowed display of the manuscript, preserving a genuine slice of 18th-century history.

This is one of the strongest subjects in the Eternal line — Voltaire’s surviving manuscripts and letters are widely collected, and relic pieces with clean script fragments are especially prized.

The fragment displayed in this card shows handwriting characteristic of Voltaire’s period and style, aligning with known 18th-century French manuscript samples attributed to him:

Long, Elegant Ascenders

The tall, narrow upward strokes on letters such as l, h, and b exhibit the elegant extension typical of Voltaire’s hand. His writing often shows a controlled yet expressive rise, which is visible in this fragment.

Tight Internal Loops

Voltaire frequently wrote with compact loops on letters like e, o, and d. The fragment displays similar loop construction, reflecting a fast, confident script shaped by decades of correspondence.

Distinct Rightward Slant

The text leans forward with momentum — a hallmark of Enlightenment-era French cursive, but especially consistent with Voltaire’s energetic correspondence style. His script commonly “leans into the sentence,” mirroring the intellectual urgency of his prose.

Iron Gall Ink Characteristics

The ink tone shows brown-black coloration and natural oxidation, consistent with 18th-century iron gall ink. The soft feathering and aged tonality match what collectors expect from period manuscripts.

Rag-Based Linen Paper

Even in a small relic piece, the fibrous texture and density are identifiable as hand-laid, rag-based 18th-century paper — the standard medium used in Voltaire’s lifetime, long before industrial wood pulp paper.

Flow and Tempo of Script

The strokes show a practiced, rapid movement consistent with Voltaire’s famously prolific writing habits. His letters often reflect fluid, continuous expression — seen here in the clean curvature and connected form.

While Eternal notes that relics are sourced from period materials attributed to the subject, the handwriting characteristics strongly match 18th-century French documents from Voltaire’s era, and align with traits recognizable in authenticated exemplars
